Hang It Up To Dry
Skill Focus: Concepts of Print, Name Recognition, Vocabulary
Educator Prep: Roll out a sheet of chart paper lengthwise along an empty wall space. Draw a large sun in an upper corner of the sheet. Glue a piece of clothesline rope across the upper quarter of the paper. Pin clothespins on the line.
Tell children they are going to create a wall display showing things that can be hung on the clothesline to dry. Explain that you want them to draw a picture of something that they learned will absorb water and will dry when the water evaporates. Read the list on the “What Absorbs Water?” chart.
- Discuss items with children. Have children choose an item or think of a new item they want to draw to hang on the clothesline to dry in the sun.
- Give each child a sheet of paper and have him or her draw the item. At the bottom of the page, have the child dictate or write to complete the sentences:
A <blanket> will absorb water.
<Child’s name> hangs it up to dry.
Encourage children to have their family members view the display at drop-off or pick-up time.
