  • dot-to-dot copies of the word up (one per child)
  • pencils or crayons

Foundational Skills/RF.PK.MA.1.d: Recognize and name some uppercase letters of the alphabet and the lowercase letters in one’s own name.

Head Start Outcomes:

Literacy Knowledge/Alphabet Knowledge: Recognizes that the letters of the alphabet are a special category of visual graphics that can be individually named.
Literacy Knowledge/Early Writing: Copies, traces, or independently writes letters or words.

PreK Learning Guidelines:

English Language Arts/Reading and Literature 7: Develop familiarity with the forms of alphabet letters, awareness of print, and letter forms.

ELA Focus Skills: Letter Recognition, Small Motor Skills, Word Recognition

Educator Prep: Make a copy of the word up for each child. Place a star at the upper left corner of the “u” and a heart at the upper left corner of the “p.”

Help children practice writing the word up.

  • Give each child a copy of the word up.
  • Model how to trace the letters of the words with your fingers, beginning at the star to trace the letter “u.” Continue at the heart to begin tracing the letter “p.”
  • Have children trace the word with their fingers on their papers.
  • Distribute crayons or pencils.
  • Let children trace the dots to write the word up.
