Talk Together: Review “What Absorbs Water”
STEM Key Concepts: Water behaves differently on different surfaces; Some surfaces absorb water, some don’t
ELA Focus Skills: Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary
Review with children what they learned about water drops. Then display and review the “What Absorbs Water?” chart you made earlier in the week. Read each item and have children describe what happened when they placed the item in the water. Encourage them to use descriptive vocabulary in their descriptions.
Then show children the new materials they will be exploring. Ask, Do you think these objects will absorb water? Have children touch and describe the material the objects are made of and make predictions. (Some children may recall from previous water explorations that the sponge absorbs water.) Discuss children’s ideas about why they think some things absorb water and others things don’t.
