ELA Focus Skills: Counting, Phonological Awareness (Rhythm, Rhyme, and Repetition)

Ask children to recall the story of the ten pigs that got clean/dirty, Ten Dirty Pigs/Ten Clean Pigs. Tell children you are going to teach them a poem about some other little pigs. Say, These pigs had lots of fun jumping on a bed—until they fell off and bumped their heads!

  • Chant the poem and do the hand motions.
  • Invite children to repeat each line and do the hand motions after you.
  • Have five children at a time sit on the classroom rug and act out the rhyme as the whole class recites.

Five Little Piggies
Five little piggies jumping on the bed                        (hold up five fingers)
One fell off and bumped her head                             (touch head)
Momma called the doctor and the doctor said,        (hold phone to ear)
“No more piggies jumping on the bed!”                    (shake index finger “no”)

(Repeat, subtracting a pig each time, then sing the final verse below.)

No little piggies jumping on the bed                          (shake head “no”)
None fell off and bumped his head
Momma called the doctor and the doctor said,        (hold phone to ear)
“Put those piggies back in the bed!”
