ELA Focus Skills: Letter Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Beginning Sounds)

Educator Prep: Print out the Between the Lions alphabet chart or create an alphabet chart on chart paper.

Have children go on a letter hunt to review what they have learned about letters. Hide the letters from “Aa” to “Zz” around the room. Make sure to place some strategically so that each child finds at least one.

After the hunt, gather children together and invite each child to present his or her letter(s). Ask,

  • What letter(s) did you find?
  • Can you point to your letter(s) on the alphabet chart?
  • Can you name one object that begins with each of your letters)?
