Help children write the word up on their own.

  • Give each child a paper with the word up written at the top.
  • Have children trace the word with their fingers along with you.
  • Distribute pencils or crayons.
  • Let children write the word up.
  • Encourage children to write the word several times.

Adaptation: For children who are ready, use lined manuscript paper. Show them how you made the letters on the lines.

Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
