Educator Prep: Fill the sensory table with beans. Laminate magazine pictures of people. (various ages, ethnicities, abilities, color, etc.) Bury the pictures and the toy furniture in the beans.

Tell children they are going to work together to search in the beans for pictures of people. Then they will use those pictures and create a family or a group of friends. 

Ask children who they want to have in the family (friend group) they create. Encourage use of content vocabulary, for example, grandfather, mother, sister, brother. Then have children dig in the beans and pull out pictures of their "family."

After children have created their "family" (friend group), have them use the objects they find in the beans to build a place or home for the family.

  • Demonstrate how the cardboard pieces will stand up in the beans so they can create a house or play area for the family (friend group).
  • Encourage children to act out something the family (friend group) likes to do together.
