Educator Prep: Display pictures of a guitar and a kazoo, or play real instruments as you introduce the activity to children.
Tell children they are going to watch a short Between the Lions video clip “Rocket–Doodle–Doo” about a guitar-playing robot and a kazoo-playing rooster that sing a song. Set a listening focus for children as you ask them to look for words that have the letter "r" in the video.
- Give each child a letter card "Rr." Say, Any time you see the letter "r" in the video, hold your card up high.
- Play the video once without pausing.
- Replay the clip and encourage children to sing and dance along. Remind them to hold up the "r" card when they see and "r" word on the screen.
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
