Watch Together: "Mixing Paint" (PEEP live-action)
STEM Key Concepts: There are many different colors; A color can have many different shades (from very light to very dark); White paint mixed with a color makes a lighter shade of the same color; Mixing white pair with a color makes a lighter shade of the same color; Mixing black paint with a color makes a darker shade of the same color; Two or more colors can be combined to make a new color; Objects can be classified by color
ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Creative Expression, Speaking and Listening, Vocabulary
Tell children that they are going to watch a short video about children exploring colors. Explain that the children in the video are mixing paint colors and shades of color for different parts of a map. Set a viewing focus for children by having them make a connection to the colors they mixed while creating their maps.
Play PEEP and the Big Wide World “Mixing Paint.” After viewing, ask questions such as,
- Why do you think the children in the video chose dark purple for the street? What color did you mix to make the street on your map?
- What color did you make your trees? Why did you use that color? Was it the same color the children in the video chose for their trees?
- Did the children mix any of the same colors you mixed when you were exploring? Did they use those colors for the same part of the map that you used it for?
- What colors did you use to make the grass darker? What can you do to make it lighter?
Educator Tip: Watching and discussing the selected PEEP stories and live-action video clips can spark and extend children’s interest and understanding of color. We suggest that children watch the video clips after they have had an opportunity to do their own initial exploration of color. That way your children can compare their experiences and discoveries with those shown on the video clip and think about what additional color explorations they might like to try.
