Educator Prep: Prepare a "Library Card" box by labeling a small cardboard or plastic box for children to store their library cards. Print out the Between the Lions library cards, one for each child.

Display Lola at the Library (opened to the page where Lola is putting the library card in her backpack.)

  • Pass around a real library card for children to look at. Ask children if they have their own library card.
  • Talk about why you need a library card to borrow books from the library.

Give each child a Between the Lions library card. Tell children they will be able to use their cards at different Centers this week.

  • Have children write dictate or their name on a library card. Accept pre-writing scribbles and marks.
  • Then have children use the art supplies to decorate their cards.

Once children have finished their cards, have them place them in the "Library Card" box and tell them the box will be kept in the Pretend and Play Center. Say, If you want to take books out of the library, you will need to find your library card in the box before borrowing any books. Place the box in the Center so children will know where to go to find their cards.

Adaptation: For children who have the ability to write the letters in their name you may want to review and emphasize that names begin with an uppercase letter. Encourage children to refer to the alphabet chart to help them shape the uppercase letter of their name.
