Educator Prep: Before the activity, cut out a large coconut tree from construction paper or posterboard and tape it to the floor. For each letter card, punch a hole and string a piece of yarn through the hole to use as a necklace.

Tell children they are going to act out the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

  • Select three volunteers and give each one a different letter card. (“Aa,” “Bb,” and “Cc”) Have volunteers wear the letters around their necks.
  • Ask another child to be the narrator. Have the narrator recite the beginning lines of the story with you: “A told B, and B told C.”
  • Have the children wearing the “Aa,” “Bb,” and “Cc” letter cards say in unison, “I’ll meet you at the top of the coconut tree,” as they scurry to the top of the tree.

Add more parts to the retelling as children become familiar with the story.

English Language Learners: Review and name some of the actions in the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom before doing the activity, and act out the action. Have children repeat the action words and act them out after you.
