  • Point to and read the first word of the poem title, Up.
  • Point to the second and third words in the title and say, The title of this poem is “Up, Up, Up.” Point out that the words repeat. Have children say the title with you.

Read the poem through once and track the words as you read. Then invite children to recite the poem with you.

  • Open the book to an illustration of a coconut tree. As you read the first four lines, move your finger up the trunk of the coconut tree. As you read the last four lines, move your hands down the trunk of the tree.
  • Give each child a small plastic letter. Ask children to raise the letter up over their heads when you say the first four lines of the poem and then drop the letters down to the floor when you say the last four lines of the poem.

Up, Up, Up
Up, up, up
The coconut tree,
Raced 26 letters
As silly as can be.

Down, down, down
The coconut tree,
Fell 26 letters. What a sight to see!
Chicka chicka BOOM! BOOM!

English Language Learners: Help children grasp meaning of the words up and down. Play a round of Simon Says with children using only the words up and down as the choices. Vary the action for each round, for example: Simon says jump up! Simon says put your head down! etc.
