Distribute a book to each child. Tell them you are going to sing a song as you teach them how to hold a book as they read.

Have them watch your motions and listen as you sing  “This Is the Way We Hold Our Books” the first time. Then have children repeat the motions after you as you sing again.

This Is the Way We Hold Our Books
(sung to the tune of Lazy Mary)
This is the way we hold our books,
Hold our books, hold our books.
This is way we hold our books
When we are busy reading.

This is the way we open our books,
Open our books, open our books.
This is the way we open our books
When we are busy reading.

This is the way we turn a page,
Turn a page, turn a page.
This is the way we turn a page
When we are busy reading.
