Encourage children to select a book that interests them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with a partner.
- Ask children to show you or a partner the front and back covers and to point to the title of the book. Read aloud the title to child(ren).
- Then ask children to tell you or their partner about the book they have selected.
- Encourage them to talk about the pictures and the sounds they might hear if they were in the places pictured.
- Acknowledge when children carefully turn the pages.
English Language Learners: Have children name and point to parts of the book with you (title, author, illustrator) to help build their vocabulary.
