Skill Focus: Fine Motor Skills, Letter Recognition, Speaking and Listening

Have children press uppercase "S" and lowercase "s" molds into the sand. Encourage them to use their fingers to make the letters in the sand as well.

As they work, hold up word cards and have children identify and trace words that begin with “Ss.”

Adaptation: If you don’t have a sand table, use a cake pan or baking dish to hold the sand (or salt). Pour a small amount of sand into the pan and have children do the activity with molds and tracing. Use more than one pan if you have multiple children doing the activity. This activity can also be done outside in a sand box.
