Literacy Knowledge/Phonological Awareness: Identifies and discriminates between sounds and phonemes in language, such as attention to beginning and ending sounds of words and recognition that different words begin or end with the same sound.

English Language Arts/Reading and Literature 8: Listen to, identify, and manipulate language sounds to develop auditory discrimination and phonemic awareness.

ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness (Beginning Sounds)

Play a listening game with children to introduce the /s/ sound. Read the following list of words and say, I am going to read two words at a time. Listen carefully to the sound at the beginning of each word. If the first word begins with an /s/ sound then shout out the sound, and give me a “thumbs up.” (demonstrate for children) Give me another “thumbs up” if you think the second word begins with an /s/ sound, too.

sound–soft
sound–sizzle
sound–loud
sound–grumble
sound–snort
sound–silly

English Language Learners: If English language learners are having trouble with the /s/ sound, partner them with native English speakers and have them practice together saying the words sun, soap, and slip.
