Skill Focus: Fine Motor Skills, Letter Recognition, Word Recognition, Vocabulary

Display the night word card. Read the word together. Point to the letter “n” and ask, What is the first letter in the word night? Point to each of the remaining letters as you read them and have children repeat. Arrange the letters “i,” “g,” “h,” and “t” in order. Point to the empty space and say, One letter is missing. Can you tell me which letter is missing? Have children search for the uppercase “N” from the tub of letters. Ask a volunteer to put it in place and say the word with you. On another day repeat with the word quiet.

Adaptation: For younger children, you may want to have them pick up letters from the tubs with their fingers instead of the fishing pole.
