Skill Focus: Sorting and Classifying, Vocabulary

Educator Prep: Make a 3-column masking tape chart on the floor in the Science and Math center area. Head columns with “loud,” “medium,” and “quiet” and an accompanying picture of an object that makes that sound.

Place pictures on a table. Spread them out so children can see them. Have children work together to sort the objects into three categories: things that make loud, medium, and quiet sounds. After children have three piles, have them arrange the pictures on the floor chart in the correct columns. Encourage them to use new vocabulary while discussing the objects, sounds, and categories.
