Display the read-aloud book Night In the Country by Cynthia Rylant and City Lullaby by Marilyn Singer. Acknowledge children's artwork, writing, and charts displayed around the room. Talk about the things children did and learned this week, including their work in the Learning Centers.

For example, say, This week we began learning about loud and soft sounds heard at night, in the city, and in our own environment. We also began exploring making these sounds with different materials and different parts of our body. We also learned about the letters "Nn" and "Qq."

Ask children to name a favorite sound they heard this week and what was the source of the sound. Then ask questions such as,

  • Can you demonstrate making a loud sound and then a soft with your voice? WIth your hands?
  • Who can tell me about a country sound and a city sound we learned about in our read-alouds? Are there more loud sounds in the city or the country? Why do you think that is?.
  • Can you describe a sound you heard on our listening walk? Did you hear the same sounds or new sounds from our earlier listening walk a few weeks ago?
  • We also learned about the letters "Nn" and "Qq" and talked about the words night and quiet.
  • Can you tell me another word that begins with the letter "Nn?" The letter "Qq?"
  • Can you use the word night in a sentnece? The word quiet?

Review the charts made throughout the week. Point out how many new things children learned about loud and quiet sounds this week.

Congratulate children on being observant scientists as they explored sounds. Invite them to take turns naming their favorite sound making activity this week and sharing why it was a favorite.

Let children choose a favorite song or poem from the week to sing or recite together.
