Read aloud Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson to individuals or small groups.
- Point out the animals on the cover. Have children name the animals on each page.
- Use the illustrations, gestures, and sound effects to help children understand the meaning of unfamiliar sound words such as gnarl, moan, groan, grumble, and slurp. As you read, pause and have children fill in the rhyming word.
After reading, invite children to make some of the noises the animals heard in the cave (wind howling, pitter-pat of the mouse, snoring, growling of the bear).
Encourage children to make connections between the story and their own lives. Ask,
- What do you need in order to sleep? Where do bears sleep? (den, lair)
- Where do you sleep? (room, bed)
- Do you need it to be quiet or loud when you sleep?
- Does the bear need it to be quiet too? Why?
