Skill Focus: Book Care and Handling, Choosing Books, Concepts of Print

Encourage children to select a book that interests them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with other children. Ask them to show you the front and back covers of the book. Point to the first and last pages of the book as you model where to begin and stop reading. Ask children to tell you about the book they have selected. Let children turn the pages, prompting them as needed. Praise children for turning the pages gently and handling the books with care.

Adaptation: If children choose a sing-along book, sing the song with them a few times and then encourage them to sing independently.
