Skill Focus: Story Comprehension, Vocabulary

Read aloud Abiyoyo by Pete Seeger to individuals or small groups. Invite children to participate by saying the repeating word Zoop! with you. Children can also strum their rubber band guitars when the boy strums his ukelele.

Pause to explain the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases such as disappear, edge, flat, grin, precious, and shadow. Use the illustrations and gestures to help children understand the meaning of words and phrases such as claws, foolish grin, out of breath, and fell flat on the ground.

English Language Learners: Whenever possible, demonstrate word meanings with gestures and facial expressions. Have children repeat the word and the gesture after you.
