Skill Focus: Sorting and Classifying

Draw a chart with three boxes in a row. Label the boxes “loud,” “medium,” and “quiet.” You may wish to draw a volume icon to show the volume level associated with each word. Hold up a picture and ask a volunteer to make the sound it makes. Ask, Do you think of that as a loud, medium, or quiet sound? Model how to glue the picture in the matching box. There may be some discussion of where to place pictures. (sometimes a cat purrs softly but meows loudly) Ask children to think of a solution for this problem.
