Skill Focus: Concepts of Print, Vocabulary

Have each child draw a picture of something that makes a favorite sound. Ask the child to dictate a caption for the picture by completing the sentence frame:

My favorite sound is _______________<kitten purring>.
My  _______________<cat> makes a  _______________<soft> sound.

Write the child’s sentence under the picture. Point to the words as you read the sentences aloud. Encourage the child to trace over the words as you read. Ask the child to write his or her name on the page. Tape all the pages together, and display on the wall for the class to “read” together. Afterward, you can fold the pages into an accordion book (fold on the tape). Together, brainstorm a title for the class book and create a cover. Place it in the Library Center for children to read and enjoy.
