Skill Focus: Concepts of Print, Story Comprehension

Encourage children to select a book that interests them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with other children. Ask children to tell you about the book they have selected. Encourage children to turn the pages, prompting them as needed. Praise children for turning the pages gently and handling the books with care.

Ask children to turn to their favorite picture. Read the accompanying text aloud. Ask, What kind of music is this book about? What does this music sound like? If children have chosen a nonfiction book that features a glossary, review what a glossary is and talk about the terms in it. Ask, How does this help you understand the words in the book?

English Language Learners: Have children name and point to parts of the book with you (title, author, illustrator) to help build their vocabulary.
