Letter Molds (“Ii”)
Skill Focus: Fine Motor Skills, Letter Recognition
Educator Prep: Print out the Between the Lions alphabet chart or create an alphabet chart on chart paper.
Have children press “Ii” molds into the sand. As they work, talk with children about the features of the uppercase and lowercase letters. Encourage them to make the letters with their fingers in the sand. Say, You made a lowercase “i!” Can you show me the letter “i” on the alphabet chart? On the letter card?
Adaptation: You can adapt the Letter Molds activity by using a cake pan or baking dish to hold the sand (or salt). Pour a small amount into the pan/baking dish—use more than one if multiple children are doing the activity.
