ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness (Rhyme, Repetition), Name Recognition

Tell children you will be singing a song with them. Explain that the song asks them to show something they can do. Ask children, What is something you can do? Help children by asking them what they do for fun while they are playing or if they have any favorite songs they like to sing.

  • Sing the chant as you hold up a child’s name card. Tell children you want that child to say his or her name out loud after you say “Hello.”
  • Assure children who are not yet recognizing their name in print that you will look directly at them as you hold up their name card. Say, That way you will know it is your turn to shout out your name.
  • Then explain that you want the whole group to sing the rest of the song with you. Say, When we sing “Show us something you can do,” the child whose name has been chosen should show us something that he/she can do. When we finish the second verse, we will all repeat that movement.

Continue until all children have had a turn. You may want to end by singing “Hello Everyone” and have them all show what they can do.

Show Us Something You Can Do
Hello, <child’s name>. How are you?
Show us something you can do.
(child performs motion)

This is what <child’s name> can do.
We can all do it, too.
(children copy motion)

Social Emotional Tip: Help children build their concept of self as they say their names. Remind each child to use a strong, clear voice to acknowledge that he or she is an important member of the group.
