Skill Focus: Fine Motor Skills, Letter Recognition

Educator Prep: Print out the Between the Lions alphabet chart or create an alphabet chart on chart paper.

Have children press uppercase and lowercase “Cc” molds into the sand.

As children work, talk with them about the features of the uppercase and lowercase letters.

Demonstrate how to make the letters in the sand and then encourage them to repeat after you. Say, You made a lowercase “c!”  Can you show me the lowercase letter “c” on the alphabet chart? Then hold up the word card color and have them point to the letter "c" in the word. Repeat with the uppercase "C."

Adaptation: You can adapt the “Letter Molds” activity by using a cake pan or baking dish (in place of a sand table) to hold the sand (or salt). Pour a small amount of sand into the pan and have children do the activity with molds and tracing. You can use more than one pan if you have multiple children doing the activity. This activity can also be done outside in a sand box.
