Read Together: My Family Plays Music #2
ELA Focus Skills: Parts of a Book, Story Comprehension, Vocabulary
Before You Read
Play examples of different styles of music. Choose pieces in which specific instruments, e.g., drum, guitar, can be distinctly heard. Direct attention to the Instrument Wall and have children point to an instrument when they hear it playing in the music. Ask children to act out playing that instrument and to move to the music as they play.
Set a listening focus for the book by having children listen for the different kinds of music each member of the family plays.
As You Read
- As a music style is introduced in the book, play a short piece of music in that style to help children understand the author’s description.
- Pause and define unfamiliar vocabulary and phrases, such as “cathedral” or “swell like waves.”
- Turn to the page with the text “This is my family. We all love different kinds of music, but we all love one another. And when we get together, we celebrate!” Then ask, What are some of the ways we use music to celebrate?
After You Read
Have a volunteer choose a page and then have children act out the movement and sounds described on the page. Continue with other volunteers.
