ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary
Before You Watch
Tell children they will watch a short video about the sounds different musical instruments make.
- Have children watch Between the Lions “Poem: Tuning Up” to review sound and music vocabulary.
- Give children a viewing focus by asking them to listen to the different sound each instrument makes.
As You Watch
Play the video once, to allow children time to listen.
Play the video a second time and ask questions as you view, such as,
- What does the tuba do? (moans) What does the violin do? (sings) What sounds do they make? Have children act out the sounds.
- Repeat with the other instruments featured.
After You Watch
After viewing, review with children the instruments and the quality of sounds the instruments make. Ask,
- What kind of sound (pitch) does the tuba make? (low). Why do you think it makes a low sound?
- Do you remember what kind of sound was made by the triangle that Alvin played? (high) Why do you think it made a high sound?
Invite children to make the high/low sounds as they say the words.
