Read Mama Zooms by Maria Frazee aloud to individuals or small groups. This story is about a little boy who spends busy days zooming up hills, down ramps, and around town on pretend adventures with his mom, in her wheelchair. Linger over pages to allow children to talk about and question the things they see in the illustrations. Ask questions such as,
- What is Mama’s “zooming machine”?
- What do you think the boy was feeling when he said “She’s my ship at sea” as they zoomed through a puddle? Or “She’s my train in a tunnel” as they zoomed through a dark hall?
As you read, name some of the actions in the story, and pantomime the action. Have children repeat the action words and pantomime after you.
