Skill Focus: Concepts of Print, Speaking and Listening, Vocabulary

Read Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee aloud to individuals or small groups. Take a picture walk through the book, asking children to point out things in the illustrations that are important in the story, such as the characters, the setting (amusement park), etc. Ask questions, such as,

  • Where do people ride on a roller coaster?
  • Why do you think the author wrote about a roller coaster instead of another ride, like a merry-go-round?
  • Is a roller coaster a quiet ride? Why?

Linger over pages to allow children to talk about interesting things they see in the illustrations.

English Language Learners: Name some of the actions in the story and pantomime the action. Have children repeat the action words and pantomime after you.
