ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness, Speaking and Listening, Vocabulary

Tell children you are going to sing a song about a girl who rolls down a hill.

Sing the song through once so children can hear the lyrics. Then invite everyone to sing along, make the motions and sound effects, and clap to the rhythm.

Invite children to write additional verses about other things that happened to Samantha as she rolled along. You may want to encourage children to make up other silly things that might have happened to Samantha.

She’ll Be Rolling
(sung to the tune of “She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain”)
She’ll be rolling down the hill now when she comes.
She’ll be rolling down the hill now when she comes.
She’ll be rolling on her new skates,
She’ll be rolling on her new skates,
She’ll be rolling on her new skates when she comes.

She’ll be zooming down the hill fast when she comes. (Zoom! Zoom!)
She’ll be zooming down the hill fast when she comes. (Zoom! Zoom!)
She’ll be zooming like a jet plane,
She’ll be zooming like a jet plane,
She’ll be zooming down the hill fast when she comes. (Zoom! Zoom!)

And she’ll snag a net and kite when she comes. (pretend to grab net, kite)
And she’ll snag a net and kite when she comes. (pretend to grab net, kite)
Then she’ll swerve off without stopping,
Yes, she’ll swerve off without stopping,
As she snags a net and kite when she comes. (pretend to grab net, kite)

Then she’ll crash into a wedding when she comes. (clap hands twice)
Then she’ll crash into a wedding when she comes. (clap hands twice)
And she’ll end up with the bride’s veil,
Yes, she’ll end up with the bride’s veil,
As she crashes through a wedding when she comes. (clap hands twice)

Adaptation: With very young children, sing the song and do the movements one line at a time, with one child at a time.
