STEM Key Concepts: There are many different colors

ELA Focus Skills: Color Recognition, Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary

Educator Prep: Print out a copy of the Between the Lions "A Kite" poem chart or copy the words onto chart paper. 

Display the sentence chart and read the poem “A Kite” aloud.

Hold up a sheet of orange paper and have children identify the color. Then say, Now, let’s change the color of the kite. Let’s make it orange! Display the color word cards and ask children to find the orange card. Insert it in the space in the sentence chart. Touch each word as you read the poem again.

Insert a different color card and ask children to read the poem with you. Show them how they can use the chart on their own. Encourage them to use it independently or with a buddy.

A Kite
A red kite is lots of fun.
So grab the string and run, run, run.
Watch it go up in the sky
Because a kite is meant to fly.

Educator Tip: This poem can be used throughout the unit with other colors, so keep the chart handy.
