Encourage children to select books that interest them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with other children. Ask each child to show you the front cover and point to the title of the book. Read aloud the title. Then read the author and illustrator names.

Then ask the child to tell you about the book he or she has selected. Invite the child to turn the pages to show his or her favorite parts of the book. Acknowledge him or her for turning the pages gently and handling the books with care.

Read several important parts of the book aloud and talk with children about each part. Ask, What is happening on this page? What do you think will happen next?
