Greeting Song: “I See Someone” #1
ELA Focus Skills: Name Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Rhythm and Repetition)
Have children sit in a circle. Tell them you are going to sing a greeting song and each time you will hold up a different name card. Say, If I hold up your name card, I will ask you to stand and say your name. Demonstrate the procedure.
- Sing the first verse of “I See Someone,” stopping on the last word to show the name card of a child.
- Sing the second verse and signal the child whose name appears on the card to stand up and, after the last line, to say his or her name.
- Invite all children to repeat the child’s name in unison.
- Repeat until each child has a chance to call out his or her name.
- Support children who may not recognize their names in print by saying, Let’s sing the song again. Get ready Sophie; this time it will be your turn to say your name.
I See Someone #1
(sung to the tune of “London Bridge”)
I see someone that I know,
That I know,
That I know.
I see someone that I know
And it’s (hold up child’s name card).
Please stand up and say your name,
Say your name,
Say your name.
I see someone that I know,
My friend (child says his or her name).
Adaptation: For very young children, sing one line at a time, and then ask them to repeat it after you.
Adaptation: For young children or children not recognizing the letters in their names, you can place matching stickers on the child’s name card and next to the name on the name chart. Have children find the sticker that matches the sticker on the name card and then point to their name.
Social Emotional Tip: Encourage each child to listen as the group says his or her name aloud, as this will help build self-concept.
