ELA Focus Skills: Alphabet Awareness, Gross Motor Skills, Letter Formation

Make the letter “Bb” on the floor or playground with chalk or tape. Mark the starting point at the top left.

  • Have children walk around the letter “Bb,” beginning at the starting point and following the line.
  • Tell children that when they follow the first bump in the uppercase “B” and end at the straight line, they have to turn around and follow the second bump.
  • Invite children to bounce (jump up and down) along the line as if they were bouncing balls, chanting, bounce, bounce, bounce for “b”!

Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
