ELA Focus Skills: Name Recognition, Phonological Awareness

Sing “Good Morning” to children. Give each child a name card. Tell children you are going to help them match their name card to the name chart after you sing to them.

  • Say, After we sing the song to you, hold up your name card next to the name chart and we will match the card to the name on the chart. You may need to help children trace a letter on their name card and then on the chart to help them recognize the letters in their names.
  • Have the group repeat the child’s name for the cheer at the end.

Good Morning
(to the tune of “Happy Birthday”)
Good morning to you,
Good morning to you,
Good morning dear <child’s name>,
We’re glad you are here.

Together we’ll play,
Together we’ll learn,
Together we sing this,
So your friends can all cheer!

Adaptation: For young children or children struggling with their letters, you can place a matching sticker on each child’s name card and next to each name on the name chart. Have children find the sticker that matches the name card and then point to their name.
