One-on-One Reading: The Three Little Pigs Variations
Skill Focus: Concepts of Print, Letter Recognition, Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary
Read a version of The Three Little Pigs.
Then choose an different version of story and read it aloud to individuals or small groups.
- Explain that it is a different version of the same story and some of the words may be different but the story is similar.
- Say, That also means it is written by a different author and the pictures are by a different illustrator.
- Look at the pictures together. Ask: What do you see that is different from the first The Three Little Pigs story you heard? What is the same?
After reading, ask questions to help children see the similarities in the stories, such as,
- Who are the characters in the first version of The Three Little Pigs? Who are the characters in the second version?
- What happens to the wolf at the end of the first version? The second version? Children can answer the questions by flipping through the pages and pointing to the pictures.
If possible, make an audiotape of The Three Little Pigs by reading aloud a simple version of the story. Have children contribute the repeating refrains: “Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin” and “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in.” Children will enjoy listening to the story and their voices again and again.
English Language Learners: Name some of the actions in the story and pantomime the action. Have children repeat the action words and pantomime after you.
