Writing Exercise

Your baby needs to practice muscle movements to develop fine motor skills. Where better to exercise than outdoors!

  • Take your baby outside to blow bubbles. Encourage her to try to catch a bubble with her hands. Show her how she can clap her hands together to pop a bubble. Talk about what your baby is seeing, and touching.
  • When you’re outside, find a sandbox or an area of soft dirt. Show her how she can use her hands to pick up the sand (or dirt), let it fall through her fingers, pat it into piles, and make lines and designs in it using her hands.
  • If you are near a body of water (or can fill a bucket), encourage your baby to pick up rocks and drop them in the water to make a splash! Remember to be sure an adult is right with baby whenever she is near water.

Talk about and get excited about your baby’s experiences along with her.
