Materials

This list gives you an overview of the materials you will need throughout this three-week unit, except for the materials used in the Learning Centers. (Those are indicated with each Learning Center.) Note that you will also find a list of specific materials needed for each week at the beginning of that week.

  • Between the Lions alphabet chart
  • Between the Lions “Night Music” poem chart
  • cardboard and plastic tubes and hoses
  • chart paper
  • clipboards
  • containers (bread pans, pie pans, uncovered shoe boxes, or similar; yogurt or film containers with tightly fitting lids)
  • crayons
  • flexible tubing, such as hoses from vacuum cleaners, shop vacs, or sump pumps (look for these in the plumbing section of hardware stores)
  • index cards
  • letter cards “Nn,” “Ss,” “Qq,” and “Oo”
  • markers
  • number chart (1–10)
  • recording device (tape, video, cell phone)
  • recorded music: lullabies, quiet and soothing, slow and sad, dramatic and emotional, high-energy dance music, marching music, circus music, etc.
  • rubber bands of similar length but different thicknesses
  • small objects including some beginning with the /n/ sound and some beginning with the /s/ sound
  • small objects to put inside containers, such as dried beans, beads, paper clips, binder clips, pompoms, buttons, pencil-tip erasers, rubber bands, packing peanuts, cotton balls, tissue paper
  • tapping sticks (e.g., craft sticks, unsharpened pencils with erasers)
  • tubes, including cardboard tubes from toilet paper, paper towels, wrapping paper, and mailing tubes
  • word cards night, quiet, sound, on

Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson

A group of animals escapes a winter storm inside a sleeping bear’s lair, but the sounds they make wake the snoring bear from his sleep. 

City Lullaby by Marilyn Singer

A counting book about the sounds of a city, the text follows a red stroller as the loud sounds of the city almost wake up the baby.

Max Found Two Sticks by Brian Pinkney

A little boy who dreams of becoming a drummer uses rhythm and sound to express his feelings.

Oscar and the Bat: A Book About Sound by Geoff Waring

Bat knows a lot about sound, and Oscar the cat has a lot of questions about sound—together they listen and learn about sound. Introduces children to core science concepts about sound.

Night in the Country by Cynthia Rylant

A lyrical text tells of the sights and sounds of nighttime in the country.

The Listening Walk by Paul Showers

A father and child go for a walk and listen to the sounds they hear along the way.

What Is a Scientist? by Barbara Lehn

An informational text that shows children practicing different scientific skills.
