Unit Learning Goals

STEM

Children will:

  • Understand that there are many different colors
  • Learn that two or more colors can be combined to make a new color
  • Understand that a single color can have different shades from very light to very dark
  • Learn that mixing white paint with a color of paint makes a lighter shade of the same color; mixing black paint to a color makes a darker shade of the same color
  • Classify and sort objects by color; compare and contrast colors
  • Begin to understand that objects appear to be a different color when viewed through a colored transparent material 
  • Begin to understand that the color of light appears differently after passing through a transparent colored material
  • Make predictions about changes in color and confirm predictions
  • Share ideas and record observations

ELA

Children will:

  • Recognize, match, and form uppercase and lowercase “Cc,” “Yy,” “Pp,” “Rr” (Alphabet Knowledge)
  • Identify the front and back covers of a book and turn pages one at a time (Concepts of Print)
  • Understand the roles of author and illustrator (Concepts of Print)
  • Begin to recognize and identify environmental print (Concepts of Print)
  • Recognize the beginning sounds in familiar words (Phonological Awareness)
  • Listen for rhyme in words (Phonological Awareness)
  • Engage in active viewing and listening (Listening and Speaking)
  • Ask and answer questions about a story (Comprehension)
  • Make connections between their lives and stories(Comprehension)
  • Listen to, develop and understanding of meaning, and use new vocabulary words related to color including shade, light, dark, mix, and paint  ​(Vocabulary)

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL

Children will:

  • Participate in multi-exchange discussions
  • Begin to express their needs, wants, feelings, thoughts, ideas, and opinions
  • Begin to understand group roles, rules, and expectations
  • Listen to and learn to follow directions
  • Build their self-concept by saying their names
  • Recognize that being part of community involves working together
  • Learn to take pride in their word and appreciate the abilities of others
