Materials

This list gives you an overview of all the materials you will need throughout this 3-week unit, except for the materials used in the Learning Centers. (Those are indicated with each Learning Center.) Note that you will also find a list of specific materials needed for each week at the beginning of that week.

  • adobe brick (real or a picture)

  • circles or squares of paper with a different, colorful, alphabet letter written on each (one per child)
  • clay

  • connecting cubes
  • construction paper
  • construction paper labeled “My Alphabet Chart” (one for each child)
  • craft sticks
  • two-sided tape
  • crayons
  • digital camera and projector
  • drawing paper
  • drinking straws (or straw)

  • hair dryer (handled by adult only)
  • journals (one per child)
  • large outlines of uppercase “T” (one for each child)

  • large shape cards (circle, square, triangle, rectangle)
  • large straight pieces cut from colored poster board
  • letter card: “Xx” (multiple copies)
  • letter cards (one for each letter of alphabet)
  • magnetic fishing pole (magnet tied on a string attached to a ruler)
  • magnetic letters “x,” “r,” “a,” and “y” (several sets)
  • magnetic letters (or small single letter cards): “b,” “c,” “d,” “e,” “f,” “g,” “h,” “i,” “l,” “m,” “n,” “o,” “p,” “s,” “u,” and “w”
  • markers
  • measuring tools (measuring tape, ruler, etc.)
  • mural paper cut into sections large enough to trace a child (one for each child)

  • number cards 1–10
  • old magazines and store flyers
  • paired toys (dolls and dollhouses, plastic people and toy cars, etc.)

  • photocopies of illustrations from Building a House
  • picture book of bridges (such as Bridges are to Cross by Philemon Sturges)
  • picture of your home
  • pictures of a fox, an ax, an ox
  • pictures of bridges
  • pictures of building materials and tools (include materials featured in the read-aloud books for the week)
  • pictures of houses and buildings of different sizes and shapes
  • pictures of houses in various stages of construction
  • pictures of objects that begin with the letter sound /t/ and some of objects that do not
  • pictures of objects, some that begin with the /b/ sound (include action words)
  • pictures of real-life tall buildings (towers)
  • pictures or books of real pigs in their environment
  • pipe cleaners
  • plastic or paper cups
  • plastic or toy bat
  • play tools (including a hammer)
  • saguaro cactus (real or a picture)
  • samples of straw, twigs, and brick
  • scissors

  • storyboard and storyboard figures for The Three Little Pigs
  • string
  • stuffed animals (one for each child)
  • tape (masking or duct)
  • toolbox with real or toy tools (hammer, nails, measuring tape, pliers, screwdriver, saw)
  • toothpicks
  • toy cars (one for each child)
  • tumbleweed (real or a picture)
  • versions of The Three Little Pigs book children have been reading
  • wood blocks (approx. 4’’ × 2’’) and three short screws (for each child)
  • word cards: x-ray, build, house, tool
  • written materials from the week (charts, drawings, etc.)
