Getting Started
During this second week of the program children will be introduced to the alphabet, many of the different things a library has to offer, and they will begin to learn about what it is to be a scientist. Children will:
- Be introduced to the alphabet and recognize letters on an alphabet chart, in words, and in their environment
- Learn about what a library has to offer as they explore the library and watch Between the Lions videos about the library
- Begin to understand that scientists are explorers who ask questions, make observations, and explore to collect data to find answers
- Develop social emotional abilities as they
- work with a partner or small group and begin to share ideas during explorations
- continue to discuss qualities that make a person a good friend
- Listen to read-aloud books Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin, Jr. and Bill Archambault, a story about an alphabet that climbs a coconut tree in; Lola at the Library, by Anna McQuinn, a story about a girl who loves to go to the library; and What is a Scientist? by Barbara Lehn, an informational text introducing children to skills scientists use to explore their world
