Getting Started
In the first week of this unit, children begin to learn about how houses and buildings are built. Children will:
- Explore the different materials used in building houses and structures
- Be introduced to different parts of a house
- Build their own houses out of various materials
- Recognize and identify two-dimensional shapes in houses and buildings
- Be introduced to the concept of construction as they listen to Building a House by Byron Barton, a book that describes the steps in building a house
- Begin to understand the importance of taking the time to build a sturdy house by watching Between the Lions “Huff and Puff,” a show about the three little pigs
- Discover that there can be many different versions of a story as they compare the story The Three Little Pigs by Paul Galdone and the Between the Lions “Huff and Puff” video
- Understand that people and animals live in many different kinds of homes
- Revisit the letter “Hh” and the letter sound /h/ and be introduced to the letter “Bb,” the beginning sound /b/, and the word build
