Week 1: Houses and Homes

Learning Centers

Letter Shaping (“Bb”)

Shape pipe cleaners or roll “snakes” from strips of clay to form the letter “Bb.” Have children form their own letters “Bb.”

Beautiful “B”

Have children trace the letter “B” onto their paper. Remove the stencil and have them decorate the page.

Blueprints

Show the blueprint in Building a House by Byron Barton. Have children draw a blueprint for a building they would like to build.

3-D Houses

Have children build three-dimensional houses with boxes for the three little pigs. Glue straw on the first box, sticks on the second box, and red paper squares on the third box.

Building from Blueprints

Use blueprints to build the structure out of blocks. Encourage children to discuss how to make the parts of the house strong.

Will It Fall Down?

Create structures out of different materials. Have children predict and record which houses they think will fall if they try to blow the house down.

Independent and Partner Reading, Unit 6, Week 1

Encourage children to select books that interest them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with other children.

One-on-One Reading: The Three Little Pigs Variations

Choose a version of The Three Little Pigs to read aloud to individuals or small groups.

Construction Site

Have children work in small groups to pretend that they are builders at a construction site. Remind them the importance of safety as they work together to build a structure.

I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff!

Have children act out the story of The Three Little Pigs. Encourage them to act out the events in the order in which they happened.

Materials Sort

Have children place objects in the correct category: materials that are good for building a house and materials that are not good for building a house.

Nuts and Bolts Count

Have children unscrew the nuts from the bolts. Then sort and count the nuts and bolts.

Letter Molds (“Bb”)

Trace over the lowercase and uppercase “Bb.” Then have children press uppercase and lowercase “Bb” molds into the sand.

Build a House

Provide children with toy dump trucks and bulldozers so they can excavate in the sand and build a house.

"Dub Cubs" #2 (BTL game)

Invite children to play the interactive rhyming game, Between the Lions “Dub Cubs.”

My Home

Have children draw pictures of the inside or outside of their homes. Let children draw, write, or dictate a caption to put under their drawings.
