Materials

The unit materials list below gives you an overview of all the materials you will need throughout this 4-week unit, except for the materials used in the Learning Centers (those are indicated with each Learning Center). Note that you will also find a list of specific materials needed for each week at the beginning of that week.

  • pictures of objects that begin with /k/, /p/, /r/, /y/
  • plastic eyedroppers or pipettes (preferably 6” jumbo pipettes available from science supply companies)

  • shaving cream
  • sheets of colored acetate (gels) or color paddles (available at local art supply or craft shops or from educational supply houses) or transparent colored pages used as notebook dividers
  • sunglasses (child-sized, plastic, inexpensive ones often sold as party favors)

  • tempera paints (red, blue, yellow, white, black)
  • video recorder (optional)
  • white ice cube trays (available in local stores or can be ordered online)

Is It Red? Is It Yellow? Is It Blue? by Tana Hoban
A nonfiction, photographic book that teaches children colors by showing every day items in their environment and by directing them to look for specific colors in each photograph.

Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh
A concept book about color, in which three mice discover jars of red, blue, and yellow paint and explore mixing them using their feet and hands. 

Red Is a Dragon by Roseanne Thong
A concept book about colors, the book follows a young Chinese-American girl as she tells about brightly colored objects from her Asian heritage. 

Spicy Hot Colors by Sherry Shahan
A jazzy poetic text introduces color words in English and Spanish with images, rhythm, and dance steps. 

The Colors of Us by Karen Katz
Seven-year-old Lena and her mother explore identifying and mixing the many different skin colors of people in their neighborhood.
