Week 1: Tap, Shake & Pluck

Getting Started

In the first week of the unit, children continue to build on their explorations of sound by turning their focus to listening to and making music. During this week children will:

  • Explore different ways of producing sound, such as plucking, drumming, and scraping
  • Focus on qualities of sound, such as volume, pitch, and timbre, and how to reproduce qualities of sound with their voices
  • Explore using different materials to create musical instruments, such as “rubber band guitars”
  • Listen to a story about a girl who loves music, Violet’s Music by Angela Johnson, and watch Between the Lion’s “Violet’s Music” to reinforce key vocabulary such as beat, pluck, and twang
  • Learn about the powers of music by listening to Abiyoyo, a story about a boy, his father, and a giant named Abiyoyo, who is transformed from a frightening monster to a grinning giant when he hears music
  • Be introduced to the letter “Mm,” the letter sound /m/, and the word music
