Week 1: Rolling and Sliding

Getting Started

In the first week of the unit, children will begin to explore how things roll and slide down an inclined plane, or ramp. Children will:

  • Explore the different ways that objects roll and slide down a ramp
  • Build their own ramps and observe what happens when they let different objects roll or slide down the ramp
  • Be introduced to opposites, such as up and down
  • Be introduced to the concept of rolling as they listen to the story Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee, a story about a first ride up, down, and around on a roller coaster, and watch the Between the Lions video based on the story
  • Find out how ramps help people as they listen to Mama Zooms by Jane Cowen Fletcher, a story about a boy who zooms around with his mom in a wheelchair
  • Revisit the letter “Rr” and the letter sound /r/, be introduced to the letter “Zz” and the letter sound /z/, and the words zoom and ramp
