Classroom Close-Up
Shirley, a preschool teacher, reflects on some of the experiences her children had building cup towers.
“When I put out the materials, some kids just piled cups on a piece of cardboard, putting one cup on top of another. They set one cup right-side up and the next balanced precariously upside down. The unsteady towers fell, of course. “Why don’t we use the cups like columns to hold up our floors?” Jeri asked her partner. They did and before long, Jeri asked me to help her stand on a chair to add a roof on a structure taller than she could reach!”
